"We can fight stigma. Enlightened laws and policies are key. But it begins with openness, the courage to speak out. Fortunately, more and more people are finding their voices"
Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations
Living with the Tiger highlights a number of issues which are important to everyone such as family and belonging. Perhaps the single most important thing that comes out of the film is to do with stigma and how society still rejects those who are infected with HIV.
The consequences can be as severe as the disease itself. People may lose their jobs, homes, friends and social status. They may be given sub-standard health care or at times refused care entirely.
The fear of being stigmatised can prevent people from getting tested, disclosing their status or seeking further information about treatment. Ultimately, this can lead to serious health problems and increase the risk of spreading HIV.
The main causes of stigma are out-dated values linked to immoral behaviour and lack of knowledge about how HIV is transmitted. We hope the film can play a small part in educating and challenging these damaging attitudes by introducing the human face of HIV. With understanding comes acceptance.
