Living With The Tiger is an intimate and moving story about a group of HIV infected orphans  in Thailand that have been abandoned by society. The story focuses on two of the children over a period of 3 years, and highlights the problems they encounter as they try to re-integrate back into their communities. Despite their traumatic experiences, they embark on the most unlikely of ventures for a group of teenagers from the countryside; a performance in an opera....

Ryan fretting over the subtitles

How difficult can it be to edit a trailer? After all, it's only 2 minutes long and is meant to be your most enticing bits. When I sat down with Ryan, our associate editor, to discuss the structure it seemed pretty straight forward. When I looked at the first cut, I realised it wasn't.

Our main problem is the English subtitles, which make it hard to digest the picture and read the title during the fast cuts. The pacing that we had intended for the trailer simply doesn't work. Back to the drawing board!

cool-mornings

cool mornings in the countryside

Thailand may be known for its hot and sticky climate, but when we arrived in Baan Gerda in the middle of January it was the cool season. This brief period of cool weather is a welcome break from the oppressive heat during the rest of the year. It's also a few degrees cooler than the filthy air in Bangkok. It's hard to describe the pleasure in not having to sleep with either the air con or a fan.

Alas, it doesn't last very long and the mercury has already begun it's ascent to the 40C mark.

Cindy Storyboarding

The question that I keep getting asked "Why are you editing in the depths of rural Thailand?"

The options were either for me to travel to the editor or for the editor to come to Thailand. Fortunately for me, Cindy was able to re-locate from L.A. for 4 months which also had the added benefit of being kinder to our budget!

We chose to base ourselves in Baan Gerda rather than Bangkok; there are less distractions and we have the flexibility to pick up additional shots that we might need. It also means that I get to play football with the kids in the evenings, not that it influenced my decision in any way...
